Updated at 12:21 p.m.

The male pedestrian who died Tuesday morning after being struck by an eastbound commuter train near the Forest Avenue crossing in Downers Grove disobeyed crossing gates that were down, according to a statement released by the Downers Grove Police Department at 11:48 a.m.

According to the statement, the incident was reported to police at 9:49 a.m. A Metra spokesman said the collision itself occurred around 9:45 a.m.

The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released, walked around crossing gates while the Metra commuter train was west of the crossing, traveling east.

"Witnesses stated that the crossing gates were down and functioning at the time of the accident," the release reads.

Lt. Michael Willison said it couldn't be concluded yet if the pedestrian intended to be struck or if it was an accident.

Metra officials say the train was scheduled to make a stop at the Main Street station. It is not known how fast the train was going when it was crossing Forest.

All BNSF trains were back on schedule, according to Metra, as of 12:21 p.m.

11:30 a.m.

Metra says it hopes to have full BNSF service restored by noon Tuesday after a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a commuter train near the Forest Avenue crossing just west of the Downers Grove Main Street train station.

"The BNSF and the Downers Grove Police Municipality have open more tracks for trains to pass through the Downers Grove-Main Street area," an 11:16 a.m. update on Metra's website reads. "They are still working to open all of the tracks and it is anticipated that full service will be restored by 12:00 p.m."

11:14 a.m.

A male pedestrian was killed by an eastbound BNSF Metra commuter train near the Downers Grove Main Street train station Tuesday morning, Lt. Michael Willison of the Downers Grove Police Department said.

The male was hit near the Forest Avenue crossing, Willison said. The incident happened around 9:40 a.m., according to CBS Chicago.

Willison said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and an investigation is ongoing.

The lieutenant said it has not been determined yet what events led to the collision. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.

In a separate incident Monday afternoon, a Clarendon Hills man was struck and killed by a commuter train near the West Hinsdale BNSF station. Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said in that case it appeared the man intentionally stood in front of the train.

Train 1262 was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 10:47 a.m., but the train has been terminated.

"The next inbound train making all scheduled stops to Chicago and accommodating passengers at Main Street will be train #1264," Metra's advisory reads. "Train #1264 is scheduled to arrive Chicago at 11:47 a.m."

Original story:

Metra has reported train delays Tuesday morning after another "pedestrian incident" near the Downers Grove Main Street train station.

"Train #1262, scheduled to depart Aurora at 9:20 a.m. and arrive Chicago at 10:47 a.m., is presently stopped at Downers Grove-Main Street due to a pedestrian incident,"an advisory on Metra's website reads. "The train could be delayed 30 to 40 minutes.  Updates will be posted as soon as more information becomes available."

The Iraq War has claimed six Naperville residents.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003 -- and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

CNN has a stunning map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 162 Illinoisans.

Among them, six people from Naperville. From the CNN war casualties web site:

Strippers, Smokes and Sneakers? What Will Illinois Tax Next?

Illinois tax graphic posted with permission of Reboot Illinois (rebootillinois.com)

By Dennis Robaugh

Our friends at Reboot Illinois, a news website dedicated to improving the state of our state, put together a detailed infographic on Illinois taxes in light of news that the temporary income tax hike passed in 2011 could become permanent. State Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, has proposed a bill that would extend the increases indefinitely.

Can legislators afford to roll back the tax hikes as planned? The answer is, pension reform notwithstanding, no.

In 2012, the state collected almost $20 billion dollars in personal and corporate income tax revenue, a 79 percent increase from 2010. Still, the state’s backlog of unpaid bills increased by 60 percent and its unfunded pension liabilities went up by 13 percent over the same time period.

Economists have said making the tax hike permanent is likely necessary as a step to restore Illinois' finances. Most of the state's new tax revenue last fiscal year went to the woefully underfunded state pension system.

Located at 204 Crooked Tree Ct. in Naperville's Woods of Rivermist subdivsion, the $1.2 million five-bedroom house ranks number 10 on the magazine's list of priciest pads sold in 2012.

The Cotswold-style home is more than 8,000 square-feet, complete with 5 bedrooms, 7 baths, hardwood and slate floors as well as an elevator, of course.

If you're in the market to buy and want to cozy up to this now-famous pad, a 4-bedroom home is currently listed for sale two doors down, according to Zillow. However, the bragging rights come at a cool $1.3 million.

Other homes that made Chicago Magazine's list include a $4.6 million Burr Ridge Mansion, purchased by former White Sox Jim Thome, and a $12.3 million Mediterranean-style mansion in Winnetka.

Topping the list is a $15 million 66th-floor condo in downtown Chicago.

Despite Recent Rash Of Fatal Collisions, Metra Says No Patterns Exist

A male pedestrian was struck and killed by an eastbound Metra commuter train Monday at around 3 p.m. near the West Hinsdale Metra station.

By Joe O'Donnell

Roughly 25 to 30 fatal collisions involving Metra trains occur across the Chicagoland system each year, Metra spokesperson Michael Gillis said, but pinning down trends is difficult.

Get news in your inbox. Sign up for the Patch newsletter.

Like Naperville Patch on Facebook.

“It’s not possible to discern a pattern,” Gillis said, citing unofficial statistics kept by Metra’s media relations department. “Sometimes they happen once every couple weeks, sometimes we get a few happening in quick succession and then don’t have one for a long time.”

Three fatal train-on-pedestrian collisions have occurred along BNSF tracks in the western suburbs within a 12-day span this month.

The first was on March 7, when a 31-year-old Hickory Hills man was struck by a train near the Cass Avenue BNSF crossing in Westmont. On the afternoon of Monday, March 18, a 42-year-old Clarendon Hills man was struck and killed in an apparent suicide near the West Hinsdale train station. Another male pedestrian was killed the following morning, Tuesday, March 19, when he was hit by a train at the Forest Avenue crossing near downtown Downers Grove.

The age and identity of the pedestrian killed in Downers Grove has not been released by the DuPage County Coroner's Office.

All three incidents involved eastbound Metra commuter trains.

A majority of the 25 to 30 incidents that Gillis said occur annually involve pedestrians, but others involve vehicles.

“Whenever we’re aware of one that happens on our system, we try to get the police report on our file just so we can keep tabs on how many that happen each year,” Gillis said.

In 2012, Gillis’ department unofficially documented 30 fatal incidents, two of which took place along the BNSF tracks. Twenty incidents were documented in 2011, five on BNSF tracks, and 24 were documented in 2010, none of which were on the BNSF tracks.

So far in 2013, there have been four fatal collisions system-wide, with the aforementioned three occurring on BNSF tracks.

County coroners determine the causes of death in these cases, and Gillis said only a minority of them are accidents.

“The majority of these do end up being classified as suicides every year,” he said.

Gillis emphasized that his department’s data is not necessarily comprehensive, and there may be incidents that it misses. Gillis also warned that BNSF owns the tracks Metra operates in the western suburbs, so some incidents on those tracks might be completely handled by BNSF officials.

BNSF spokesperson Amy McBeth said the railroad couldn't provide Patch with any fatality statistics, but said the railway reports all accidents to the Federal Railroad Administration.

The FRA, which has numbers current up to December 2012, has records of only three fatal highway-rail incidents on BNSF tracks in DuPage and Cook counties from 2010 to 2012.

One involved a freight train hitting a pedestrian in Riverside in October 2012, and the other involved a freight train hitting a pedestrian in Downers Grove in November 2011.

College of DuPage

One of the candidates in the contested election for the College of DuPage board of trustees was previously fired from the college’s aquatics department after multiple persons alleged incidents of verbal and/or physical sexual harassment, the Daily Herald reports

According to the paper, when Frank Flores, Jr. was employed as a temporary assistant aquatics manager in the fall of 2010 until a female lifeguardreported verbal sexual harassment, a claim corroborated by another female student and a male student who also alleged physical harassment. A patron filed a separate complaint that Flores had made comments to her like “I want to taste you” and “I peed in the poor,” the paper said.

No criminal charges were filed, but after an investigation, Flores was fired on Dec. 2, 2010 and made ineligible to be hired again, reported the Herald.

In response, Flores, who is endorsed by the COD Faculty Association, told the paper that he was resented by employees for replacing a well-liked manager, that he was "dismissed unjustly after a cursory review of the facts” and that the charges were “malicious and unsubstantiated,” and accused COD President Robert Breuder of “digging in the basket of the unsubstantiated."

Cubs Fans: Is it Time for the Team to Leave Wrigley?

Chicago Athletic Clubs signed on as the largest tenant in the newly proposed boutique hotel with plans to open a 40,000-square-foot gym.

Editor's note: The author of this post is a lifelong Cubs fan.

Earlier this week it was reported on some of the Chicago sports sites that the mayor of Rosemont was offering the Chicago Cubs free land near O’Hare International Airport for the construction of a new stadium.

It’s true. The Friendly Confines aren't friendly at all. In fact, for the modern baseball fan, there really couldn’t be a much harsher game experience than Wrigley Field. Hard seats, obstructed views and unending lines for snacks and bathroom facilities.

But for die-hard fans, there is only one place to watch the Cubs lose and that’s Clark and Addison.

Some have asked that as long as the Cubbies fill Wrigley even while fielding a losing team, what incentive does the team have to put together a winning club? After all, most folks are only there for the nostalgia of the ballpark.

So, it stands to reason, if the Cubs built and occupied a new stadium in the suburbs where attendance wouldn’t be a guarantee, the incentive to play professional baseball might reappear.

The popular black yoga bottoms are sheerer than ever before, making them see-through. The company says about 17 percent of their entire stock of pants needs to be recalled.

A recent shipment of Lululemon’s popular black yoga bottoms are being recalled after the company found them to be a little too revealing.

The company posted a blog about the issue once it was discovered, saying the style of yoga pants affected account for roughly 17 percent of a store’s stock. Lululemon representatives said they first learned about the issue March 11, and as of Tuesday, they began pulling all the revealing yoga bottoms from the stores.

“At the beginning of March, our stores and e-commerce site received some black luon women's bottoms that didn't meet our high standards,” the company wrote in its blog. “The materials used in construction were the same but the coverage was not, resulting in increased sheerness. We want you to Down Dog and Crow with confidence and we felt these pants didn't measure up.”

Lululemon has two stores in DuPage County, one at 21 W. Jefferson Ave., Naperville, and one Oakbrook Center Mall in Oak Brook.

The store says its still looking into what happened with the luon at its factory in Taiwan, but in the meantime, there will be shortages at area Lululemon stores.

And while the fabric snafu may make for a inappropriate giggle, it may have negative implications on the company’s revenue forecast. Analysts say the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Lululemon Athletica Inc. cut its first-quarter revenue forecast because of the recalled yoga pants, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Officials now suspect the first quarter to close around $333 million to $343 million compared to estimates around $350 million to $355 million.

Lululemon representatives say people who purchased the sheer pants since March 1 can return them for a full refund or exchange.

There were 70 homes sold in Naperville during January.

The median price of homes sold in February was also up a small percentage in Naperville. The median price increased by .8 percent to $385,000 from $382,000 in February 2012.

The market for detached, single-family homes in suburbs throughout DuPage County saw growth in January, MORe reported. MORe gets its statistics from Midwest Real Estate Data.

Wheaton saw the second largest percent increase in DuPage County. Burr Ridge had the largest percent increase, with 11 homes sold, a 175 percent increase from February 2012.

Downers Grove had the smallest percent change, with a 4.8 percent increase in February of this year over 2012.

Overall across the Chicago suburbs, sales of single-family detached homes rose 37.5 percent in January over the same month in 2012, according to MORe.

MORe predicts February will be another month of local housing market growth, as the number of detached homes under contract in January 2013 was 60 percent higher than in January 2012.

“In many cases the cost of buying a home today is cheaper than renting,” said Tonya Corder, president of MORe and managing broker of Keller Williams Preferred Realty in Orland Park. “When you factor in affordable home prices and historically low interest rates, today’s market represents a ‘perfect storm’ of conditions that may not exist again in our lifetimes.”

DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen said Wednesday afternoon his office is still investigating the causes of the incidents that took place in Westmont on March 7, in Hinsdale on March 18, and in Downers Grove on March 19, and have yet to determine whether any of the victims intended to be hit or were hit by accident.

The cause of the first incident, in which a 31-year-old Hickory Hills man was struck by a Metra train near the Cass Avenue crossing in Westmont, won't be released until Jorgensen's office receives the victim's toxicology results. That, the coroner said, will likely take two to three weeks.

"We always do toxicology tests," Jorgensen said.

Sgt. Stephen Thompson of the Westmont Police Department, who had previously said he expected the coroner's report to be ready last week, maintained the department would not release any possible scenarios without the report.

"In a death investigation, we bring our findings together with the coroner's office and they officially name the cause of death," said Thompson, the police department's spokesperson.

The Westmont incident was the first of three similar fatal pedestrian incidents involving eastbound Metra trains along a short stretch of BNSF tracks.

On the afternoon of March 18, a 42-year-old Clarendon Hills man stepped in front of a train at the West Hinsdale train station. Though the coroner's office has not released its conclusion, Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said witnesses and surveillance video suggest the man intended to be hit.

The next morning, on March 19, a 21-year-old Downers Grove man was hit by a train at the Forest Avenue crossing in Downers Grove, just west of the Downers Grove-Main Street station. In that case, Downers Grove police cited witnesses who said the man disobeyed crossing signals that were down.
