  • “Those Who Excel” District 203 Community Award
  • Chaired and/or participated in eight Home & School Committees

  • Mathematics Tutor
  • Den Leader Cub Scout Pack 565 and Hiking Club Chair
  • President of Hobson School Parent Board and Advisory Board Member
  • Hobson Owl Award for outstanding contributor to Cooperative Preschool
  • Soccer and Chess Coach

  • What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I am running for District 203 School Board because this position will allow me to serve our community using my expertise in both education and administration. My passion for education has driven me to serve for hours in Naperville classrooms working along side students ranging from preschool to college age.  My background will provide balance, a broad perspective and a complete package of what is needed from a School Board Member.

  • What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

Implementation of the Common Core Standards is one of the largest state mandated changes that currently challenge our district.  The Board of Education will make many curricular decisions as we transition into these Common Core Standards.  As a person who has experience with curriculum adoption, district level curriculum committees and extensive curriculum research, I will provide insight and guide our district into the future by asking appropriate questions and working within limited state funding.

  • What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I have the most experience within District 203 and will bring a balance to the Board. From 1992-2000, I was a mathematics teacher at Naperville North. During this time my involvement progressed beyond the classroom to district level committees with a focus in curriculum. Outside of my educational experience, my mathematical and statistical skills served me well as I oversaw budgets from many organizations, developed programs for payroll and worked in purchasing.

  • How long have you lived in Naperville (if applicable, if not how long have you been involved with Naperville)?

I have lived, worked and volunteered in Naperville for over 19 years.  All of this time I have had the pleasure of working with students and have a pulse on what students need from our educational system.  As a parent I have experienced a broad spectrum of services from special education to honors in our District.  Having children in elementary, junior high and high school adds to my balance and diverse perspective.

  • What's your favorite thing about Naperville?

The people that make up our community caring for each other and dedicated to a high level of education.  There is an African proverb “It takes a whole village to raise a child” and many people in our community have contributed to helping raise my children.  As I serve, I too have had an impact on many students and would love the opportunity to continue to serve students and our community on the School Board.

  • What is the biggest problem in Naperville?

Naperville is a very competitive community from the classroom to the stadium, which raises not only the standards for our students but the pressures and stresses that weigh on them.  Some competition can be healthy but too much can cause a negative social and emotional impact on our children.  Keeping the well being of our students in mind should be included in the efforts of a quality School Board member such as myself.

  • Phone: 630.864.8738
  • Address: 1465 Briergate Drive

Age: 41

Family (name, relationship and age):
I am a widow. My husband passed away four years ago from cancer. I have three daughters who attend District 203 schools, Nora age 10, Maggie age 8, and Lucy age 6.

Education (degree and school):
Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Taylor University, 1993

Occupation:
Principal of Fitzgerald Consulting, a health policy firm.  Since my husband's death four years ago, I have curtailed much of my consulting work to focus on my children, their education, and advocating for cancer research.

Previous elected offices:
None

Applicable experience qualifying you for the position:

My involvement with our school district began in 1993.  As education policy advisor to our Naperville Representatives in the U.S. Congress, I worked with the Naperville education community to represent our outstanding schools in federal education policy matters.

I have been active as a school volunteer since 2008 when the first of my three daughters began kindergarten in District 203.  Nominated by the teachers at my children's school, I received District 203's "Those Who Excel" Award in 2012.  I currently serve as a member of the School Improvement Team, Co-Chair of SFCP, Committee Chair of Home and School, as well as a classroom volunteer and room parent.

  • What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

The education of our children is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a community.  With my federal education policy experience and my volunteer involvement in our district, I hope to contribute a unique perspective to the Board of Education.  Running for the Board gives me the opportunity to make a greater contribution to our community and I am dedicating myself to working to ensure the success of our students and our community.

  • What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

My number one goal is to work with the community to set educational priorities for our schools that ensure each student's success and the academic and financial future of our district.  Our district is working to implement many changes -- new curriculum, assessments and programming,  and we have growing financial challenges.  However, by prioritizing our most important goals we can ensure our academic and financial success and continue our district's outstanding track record.

  • What sets you apart from the other candidates?

The combination of my federal education policy experience and my day-to-day volunteer involvement with academic achievement in our district sets me apart from other candidates and gives me a uniquely qualified perspective.   As a part of my commitment to learning the environment at each school, I have made it a priority to go to each school and neighborhood to talk to parents, administrators and teachers about their thoughts.   This commitment also sets me apart.

  • How long have you lived in Naperville (if applicable, if not how long have you been involved with Naperville)?

I have lived in Naperville seven years.  However, my connection to Naperville began in 1993 when I worked for six years as education policy advisor to our Naperville Representatives in the U.S. Congress.  There I worked with the administrators, educators and community members in our district to help represent our outstanding Naperville schools in federal education policy matters.

  • What's your favorite thing about Naperville?

Our school district is one of Naperville's treasures.  Bright students, dedicated teachers, strong administrators, caring parents and an engaged community combine to make our schools outstanding.  I am proud of the way our community gives of our time and resources to make our schools what they are and I look forward to continuing to work together to ensure the success of our students and our community.

  • What is the biggest problem in Naperville?
Our school district is working to implement many changes --  new curriculum, new assessments, new programming and higher standards.  At the same time, we face growing financial pressures due to state and federal reductions in funding for schools and the potential cost of financing pensions.  However, by prioritizing our most important goals for students we can overcome these challenges and ensure that we will meet our academic goals for students while maintaining our financial stability.

Best of Craigslist: Fake Grenade, Rusty Scythe, Pinkie-Eating Snake

The following items and postings were found on Craigslist for the Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge area. Note: Patch has no control over the status of these posts on Craigslist and how long they remain available.

Three Stooges Bowling Ball, Little-Used

It might be that one Naperville 11-year-old never really took to the Three Stooges bowling ball his parents bought him in 2006, because according to this post offering the ball for $40, it was only used for 10-20 games. Perhaps they should have picked a TV show that aired during their son's lifetime?

Please Take My Poisonous Snake

A Naperville fellow named Danny is looking for a new home for his albino Heterodon nasicus, the western hognose snake, who appears to be known for "eating frozen thawed pinkies" (I hope those are mice of some sort?) Don't worry, he's "not mean but not handled much" (watch those pinkies), but he does have a "very mild venom" and oh, yeah, you do have your mandatory permit, right?

Get Naked, No Pay

It's the simplicity of this Naperville-based post that really gets to me. "Looking for female exhibitionist," it's titled, and consists entirely of one line: "Ladies, send me a hot pic." Sound like your type of gig? It gets better! Apparently, the "job" doesn't pay a cent.

For Your Grim Reaper Costume?

Just $85 will buy you this "vintage farm sickle" in Lisle, which is not a bad price for a prop for your next horror movie... because given that the blade is caked in rust and cracked (and it's 2013,) I wouldn't recommend it for reaping anything but souls. Plus, it's really, really scary-looking. Then again, details on the size of this terror-scythe are "coming soon," so maybe it's just a 1/20 model.

Fake Hand Grenade is Fake

A Woodridge user is offering a unique way to tell your business' patrons just what they can do with their complaints: for $30, you can buy this "Complaint Dept.: Take a Number" hand grenade. "Remember, it's fake!" the posting emphasizes. "Just a paperweight." We're very glad to hear.

But Are Those Table Legs?

Excuse me, Woodridge poster, but someone appears to have transformed the upper half of your deer into a table. Or the lower half of your table into a deer. I legitimately don't know if this bizarre table's legs are actual deer legs or not, and I'm scared to ask. But if it strikes your fancy, you can pick it up for $50.

Kyla drives herself down her ramp for the first time to the cheers of her construction crew.

7-year-old Kyla Hartigan is an inspiration to not just her parents, but to the community.

The little girl, born pre-mature with cerebal palsy is confined to a wheelchair because she cannot walk

"She is intellectually on track with her peers and is completely aware of her situation and what she is unable to do," wrote Kyla's parents. "Even so, she is always so positive and does not allow her limitations to get in the way of her happiness, which to me is what makes her so special and inspires me to be a better person."

Kyla has received assistance from the Oswego community when they helped build a ramp in her home so she could move around in her wheelchair. But she could use a little more help.

Kyla's family is taking part in the Life Moving Forward campaign that will outfit three Local Hero winners with the vehicle they need to get mobile.

"An accessible vehicle would be life-changing for this little girl who inspires so many others," said her parents on Kyla's Local Heroes page.

Kyla already has about 1,200 votes, but could sure use a lot more.

The incident took place at approximately 3 p.m. The Hinsdale Police Department and DuPage County Coroner's Office are investigating.

"We’re not releasing the identity, pending the notification of family," Wodka said.

Wodka said he could not comment yet on what led to the man being struck.

The death is the second this month of a pedestrian being killed by a BNSF Metra train. On March 7, 31-year-old Eric Bennett of Hickory Hills was struck and killed in Westmont. That incident is still under investigation.

The incident is causing BNSF delays for local commuters Monday afternoon, according to Metra's website.

"Train #1237, scheduled to arrive Aurora at 3:58 p.m., will not operate past Hinsdale this evening due to an earlier pedestrian incident involving train #1268," the site read at 4:16 p.m. "Train #1241, scheduled to arrive Aurora at 4:41, will accommodate passengers from train #1237. Train #1241 is currently operating 23 minutes behind schedule."

Since that message, Metra has announced that BNSF trains traveling between Chicago and Aurora will be stopped upon the approach to Hinsdale, and the following trains are to be delayed 60 to 80 minutes:

  • #1239 to arrive Aurora at 4:16pm;
  • #1241 to arrive Aurora at 4:41pm; and
  • #1270 to arrive Chicago at 4:44pm

Train #1274, scheduled to depart Aurora at 4:08 p.m. and arrive Chicago at 5:23 p.m., will not operate this evening, according to Metra.

Patch will have more information as it becomes available.

    Patch file photo: Johnny Borizov.

The trial of a man charged with plotting the murder of three Darien residents will be open to photographers and videographers, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday, a first in DuPage County according to the newspaper.

Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs will be on trial beginning April 16 for the murder of Jeffrey, Lori and Michael Kramer, who were shot to death in March 2010 by Jacob Nodarse in a scheme, prosecutors allege, plotted by Borizov and meant to kill Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori, sister of Michael, and father of Borizov's son.

Angela Kramer was in the house at the time and survived by hiding in a closet and dialing 911, officials have said.

Nodarse pleaded guilty in 2011 to a single murder count in a deal with prosecutors to secure his testimony against Borizov. Nodarse faces a minimum of 45 years in prison when he is eventually sentenced after testifying.

Judge Daniel Guerin ruled Monday that one video camera and one still camera will be allowed in the courtroom despite objections from both prosecutors and defense attorneys, the Trib reported.

Three witnesses who were present in the Kramers' house at the time of the murders will be off-limits for photographers, Guerin ruled.

DuPage County first applied for cameras in courtrooms in September of 2012 to begin testing the concept. Recording equipment has been present at hearings and arraignments, but never yet at a full criminal trial.

        Teen drivers

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.

Is there anything more harrowing than the day when you first hand over the keys to your brand-new teen driver, the same one who it seems like just yesterday was still biking with training wheels? It's not uncommon for parents to set some restrictions on their newly-minted leadfoots, so we took to our Facebook pages to find out what the laws on this are in some west-suburban households. Which brings us to this week's question:

What new rules do you have for your new teen drivers, and how do you enforce them?

Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

I also did not 'harp' at them for it - I made sure they CLEARLY understood that the next time they would hear about it would be when I was relieving them of the keys for the FULL YEAR. It was never a problem."— Downers Grove Patch Facebook

A male pedestrian was struck and killed by an eastbound Metra commuter train Monday at around 3 p.m. near the West Hinsdale Metra station.

By Joe O'Donnell and Collin Czarnecki

A 42-year-old Clarendon Hills man died Monday afternoon after he was struck by a Metra train passing through the West Hinsdale train station, according to Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom.

Earlier: Metra BNSF Trains Delayed After Fatal Crash in Hinsdale

Bloom said Monday night that, though the department is waiting on a coroner's report, it appears based on witness accounts and surveillance video of the incident that the man intentionally stepped in front of the train.

"We can say fairly conclusively that it does not appear to be an accident," Bloom said.

Bloom said the train that hit the man at approximately 3 p.m. was traveling through the West Hinsdale station when it struck the man. The chief estimated the train, which was carrying commuters, would have been traveling around 30 mph through the station.

The identity of the deceased has yet to be released by police.

Monday's incident caused train delays and cancellations along the BNSF line from Aurora to Union Station in downtown Chicago during the evening commute.

Numerous trains departing Aurora's Metra station as well as Union Station did not operate due to the incident while others were delayed several hours.

According to Metra, trains began operating normally shortly after 7 p.m. Monday.

The death is the second this month of a pedestrian being killed by a BNSF Metra train. On March 7, 31-year-old Eric Bennett of Hickory Hills was struck and killed in Westmont. That incident is still under investigation.
