Crime and fire news

A Batavia woman and her two daughters might be sleeping a little more soundly following the arrest of a 51-year-old Naperville man charged with their harassment.

Joseph A. Donato of Naperville faces charges of aggravated stalking, stalking and violations of an order of protection and a no-contact order, according to a report in the Daily Herald. Aggravated stalking and stalking are felonies.

Batavia police said Donato and the Batavia woman were dating for more than a year but had broken up sometime in 2012. The order of protection for the woman and her twin 11-year-old daughters was dated Dec. 12, the Daily Herald said.

Court records indicate Donato sent text messages, left notes on her door and car and confronted her in a North Aurora parking lot.

Donato was arrested Saturday, March 23, and will need to post $10,000 of his $100,000 bond to be released from the Kane County Jail.

Witnesses said a speeding vehicle traveling eastbound in the 100 block of West Jefferson Avenue side-swiped three vehicles in a row, which were traveling westbound Thursday afternoon about 1:30 p.m.

After hitting the three cars, the vehicle reportedly turned southbound on South Main Street, where it was reported to have hit two other vehicles near Main and Aurora before being stopped by police, according to witnesses.

The identity of the driver of the vehicle as well as the vehicle's make and model is unknown at this time.

Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit a black Ford Explorer as well as a tan Toyota Camry and a Chevy sedan, both of which were traveling behind the Explorer on West Jefferson.

The incident caused quite a scene as many shoppers out enjoying the spring weather in downtown Naperville gathered along the street to get a glimpse of the accident. Some local business owners had their doors propped open and heard the accident as it happened.

"The noise was ridiculous," said Anderson's Two Doors East employee Sally Blackburn. "People were screaming because they were seeing it and then the noise of the metal-on-metal was really just crazy."

After the incident, Naperville police had a portion of West Jefferson closed from South Main Street to South Webster Street as well as the intersection at Main and Aurora for about one hour.

Two vehicles with noticeable damage were being towed away from the scene shortly after 2 p.m. as city crews cleared shards of glass and debris from the street.

An employee of Elan Boutique, 143 W. Jefferson Ave., rushed out of the front door of the business after she heard tires squealing followed by the sound of an accident as the incident happened.

"I ran out the door because I'm like, 'somebody is hitting cars!,'" the employee said. "[The car] wiped everybody out. And as soon as I heard like a 'bam, bam, bam,' the cop passed my door here, so I think he might have been in pursuit."

The employee said she saw a police cruiser turning onto West Jefferson from South Webster, believed to be in pursuit of the vehicle when she exited the store.

"The first [car that was hit] was a [Explorer] and I went running up to [the driver], I had clothes in my hand, I threw them on the car and the whole side of his car was wiped out - his mirror was off, all of the glass was gone," she said.

"I got the door open, got the glass cleaned off the poor guy and he seemed to be OK and then the cops came [to help]."

It is unknown at this time if any of the drivers sustained injuries as a result of the multi-vehicle crash.

Naperville police were contacted Thursday and said they will provide more information this afternoon.

Patch will have more information as it becomes available.

Dwayne Smith, of North Aurora, was charged with retail theft, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident along with other charges after leading police on a car chase through downtown Naperville Thursday, according to police.

Police said a North Aurora man is in custody after he led police on a car chase through downtown Naperville Thursday, hitting multiple vehicles and later fleeing officers on foot.

Dwayne K. Smith, who is around 22 years old and from North Aurora, was arrested near Main Street and Aurora around 1 p.m. Thursday and faces numerous charges including two felony retail theft charges, reckless driving and resisting arrest, according to police.

The pursuit began after police responded to a report of retail theft at Target, 1951 W. Jefferson Ave., around 12:40 p.m. Thursday. When police arrived to the store, the suspect's vehicle was seen traveling east on West Jefferson by another officer, according to the Naperville Police Department.

The car then side-swiped three vehicles in a row, causing considerable damage to them in the 100 block of West Jefferson in the heart of downtown Naperville, according to witnesses.

Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit a black Ford Explorer as well as a tan Toyota Camry and a Chevy sedan, both of which were traveling behind the Explorer on West Jefferson.

After hitting the three cars, the vehicle turned south on South Main Street, where it reportedly hit another vehicle at the intersection of Main and Aurora, according to witnesses.

After the collision at Main and Aurora, police said in a release that Smith then briefly fled on foot before authorities took him into custody.

Smith was also charged with one count of retail theft Class 3 felony; one count of retail theft Class 4 felony; five counts of reckless driving; four counts of leaving the scene of an accident; resisting arrest; no valid driver's license and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to Naperville police.

"I ran out the door because I'm like, 'somebody is hitting cars!,'" the employee said. "[The car] wiped everybody out. And as soon as I heard like a 'bam, bam, bam,' the cop passed my door here, so I think he might have been in pursuit."

It is unknown at this time if any of the drivers sustained injuries as a result of the multi-vehicle crash.

Police said Smith has seven outstanding warrants in two different counties.

In DuPage County, Smith has two failure-to-appear warrants for domestic battery and traffic offenses. In Kane County, Smith was wanted for no valid driver license, obstructing identification and two warrants for resisting a peace officer.

Forest Preserve, Park District to Begin Controlled Burns

A Naperville Park District employee lights a prescribed burn at Meadow Glens Park in 2010.

Both the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and the Naperville Park District will be conducting prescribed burns in upcoming days and weeks.

How quickly the burns are completed will depend on Mother Nature.

Get news in your inbox. Sign up for the Patch newsletter.

Like Naperville Patch on Facebook.

In the forest preserve district, the burns can take a few days or as much as a month to complete, depending on the weather, according to a release from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Since the burns will take place in an urban area, the main consideration is having the winds blowing in the right direction.

Because safety depends on the weather and other factors, the district cannot schedule prescription burns in advance. However, on the morning of a prescription burn, the district posts signs and notifies local fire-protection agencies, according to the forest preserve.

Crews remain on-site throughout the process, which takes place only during daylight hours, according to the forest preserve.

Fire is used in managing the district’s wetland, prairie and woodland areas. Burns are the best way to control the undesirable and invasive species that may be growing. The burns allow the district to manage the invasive species, while fire-tolerant native species are allowed to thrive and flourish.

"We conduct prescription burns partly to remove invasive, exotic plants so fire-tolerant native species can utilize a greater share of available resources," said Scott Meister of the Forest Preserve District's Office of Natural Resources in a release. "But fire also breaks down organic plant materials, which speeds the return of valuable nutrients to the soil. It also prevents a buildup of plant debris, which can stunt new growth and keep rainwater from filtering through the soil."

Depending on the year, some areas may not undergo a prescribed burn if conditions aren’t right. In some cases the district will use mowing or, in other cases, management is put off until it is possible to conduct a burn.

At the Naperville Park District, a number of areas are expected to undergo burns in the coming days and weeks as well.

Fire departments are alerted when a burn will be under way. Neighbors are informed and police are notified as well.

Court Supervision: Not So Very Special

Bethany McKee

It was another week abbreviated by a court holiday. But even with just four days instead of five, there was plenty going on at the area's courthouses.

In Joliet, we had one of the defense lawyers in the Nightmare on Hickory Street double murder case asking for a special hearing to find out how Patch obtained police reports no other news outlet seems able get their hands on.

The Will County judge presiding over the case didn't go along with it, at least not for the moment. The judge did say he may revisit the issue of a special evidentiary hearing in the future.

Attorneys representing the two young men and two young women charged with brutal murdering Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover, both 22, backed off on their request for a special prosecutor to probe for the source of the police reports. But once again, only for the time being.

But that was just one of the things going on in court last week. What else did we have? Well, let's take a look:

The owner, Gary Grottke, worked in the corporate world for more than 20 years and has been an entrepreneur for more than 10, always taking over the back office and financial aspects of his partnerships and seeking to develop efficient methods to manage the back office of his business.

In 2011, he decided to focus his entrepreneurial efforts on the development of Quality Back Office Solutions (QBO), seeing a need for this sort of support in the small business community. In the past two years QBO has significantly grown, supporting businesses not only in the local area but around the country.

Why did you choose the area you did?

Gary Grottke, the owner, has lived in the western suburbs of Chicago for 30 years in addition to living in the Chicago area his entire life. Previously, the main location of the business was in downtown Wheaton, but he moved the business a little over a year ago to downtown Naperville in order to take advantage of the thriving business district and opportunities from the local chamber. QBO is a proud member of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and Gary is a member of a local B2B group and the Speaker's Bureau.

What does your business offer?

Quality Back Office Solutions offers individualized back office support to growing businesses. This includes bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, financial planning, budgeting, HR, advisory, and other support services. QBO offers customized service plans to business owners based on their needs at a low monthly cost - much less than hiring employees to do the work or multiple service providers. Clients range from the newly formed small business to large growing firms. The people at QBO provide more than just the services, they get to know their clients, work with them, and provide the support that allows business owners to free up their time so they can focus on what they do best.

What’s a fact about your business that most customers probably wouldn’t know.

The people at QBO are extremely attentive to detail and have actually helped a few of clients recognize theft within their business and potential tax issues. QBO has also helped some clients gain accessibility to loans and other financial support that has been significant in continuing the growth of their business. For some we are just their friendly bookkeepers that make sure their bills are paid on time and their books are straight. For others we are the support that has been essential in the growth of their business.

What’s your most popular product or service?

There is no popular service per say; however, its more the customized service plans that we offer to our clients which is what they love about us. It is this customer service oriented focus in addition to the fact that we are a small business as well that puts us ahead of the larger firms that simply are book keepers or payroll service providers.

Cubs: You'll Want to Cover Your Eyes

Sources say the Cubs want to install a digital screen three times the size of their the iconic Wrigley Field scoreboard. The alderman said nothing has been agreed to.

By Ron Kremer

  1. Pitching: At the top of the starting rotation, the Cubs are set with Jeff Samardzija and Edwin Jackson. Yet, what do you make of the guys behind them? And Carlos Marmol will start the season as the Cubs’ closer. My question: Really? How long will it take for Marmol to give way to Japanese import Kyuji Fujikawa?
  2. Distractions: The Ricketts family remains embattled with rooftop owners over plans to renovate Wrigley Field. And, there even has been talk of the Cubs moving to the suburbs. Will they grow new ivy in Rosemont? How will that play out with the Iowa tourists who annually flock to the North Side? Then, there is the ongoing talk of when/if Alfonso Soriano will be traded. If Soriano starts fast, he could be dealt in a hurry. Of course, his departure likely will leave a gapping whole in the middle of the Cubs lineup. Who’s going to trade top talent for an overpriced superstar they know the Cubs are looking to unload?
  3. Next up: After shortstop Starlin Castro, who will rise to the fore for the Cubs? First baseman Anthony Rizzo? He has the power to become a 30-homer ballplayer. He doesn’t have much a major league track record yet, though. The rest of the infield reads like not like a Who’s Who but, rather, like a list of from an Abbott & Costello routine: What’s on Third? Can you say Darwin Barney, Brent Lillibridge and Luis Valbuena and Welington Castillo?

The Cubs open at 12:35 p.m. Monday in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. The game will be televised on WGN-Channel 9.

Sox: Reason to Believe South Siders Will Contend

Laz Diaz, the scourge of Bolingbrook. By Ron Kremer
  1. Pitching: The White Sox have a mix of young and old in their starting rotation and feature a number of power arms coming out of the bullpen, headed by Addison Reed. He has worked on his off-speed stuff in the off-season. If he can keep hitters from digging in on his fastball, he could emerge as one of the top relievers in all of baseball. The question of how soon left-handed starter John Danks returns from his shoulder rehab is one that will be debated in the early going.
  2. Solid Up the Middle: Shortstop Alexei Ramirez and second baseman Gordon Beckham have developed into one of baseball’s best double play combinations. Ramirez has the range to get to balls hit in the whole and the arm to gun down even fleet-of-foot runners. Expect both to become more consistent at the plate and to provide some pop for the Sox from the lower half of their batting order.
  3. Manager Robin Ventura: He has a year of experience under his belt managing at the big-league level and a better appreciation for what his young pitchers are capable of doing in tight game situations. This will help him make the difficult decisions that ultimately define any manager and often spell the difference between pretenders and contenders.

The Sox open at home Monday (3:10 p.m.) vs. the Kansas City Royals. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet. The forecast calls for temperatures in the upper-30s. Snow flurries are possible.
