Windows, bushes and landscaping were lost Monday at OfficeMax headquarters after a wind-driven brush fire caused about $20,000 in damage, officials said.
No one at the scene was injured in the fire.
A 911 call was made at 1:41 p.m., reporting that mulch was on fire at the business at 263 Shuman Blvd. The building was evacuated until the fire was extinguished, Naperville Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Sander said in a news release.
“The intense heat from the burning materials caused 14 of the building’s windows to fail,” Sander said in the release.
Wind spread the fire from burning mulch to cover a 20-foot by 100-foot area, also engulfing about 50 bushes and other landscaping in flames, Sander said.
After the first truck arrived at the scene, a second suppression vehicle was called to the fire.
The building was evacuated until the fire was put out, which took about 10 minutes, Sander said. Crews remained on the scene soaking the area for two hours to prevent any flare ups.
"We're thankful no one was hurt," OfficeMax spokesperson Nicole Miller said. "We're pleased with the fire department's response, it was done very safe and timely."
The cause of the fire was unknown, Sander said.
