Previous elected offices:
I’ve never held elected office but I have served on appointed commission. Naperville Planning and Zoning Commission (2011 to Present), Naperville Fair Housing Commission (2006 to 2009)

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I have enjoyed serving the Naperville community on City commissions and on not-for-profit boards. I believe my experience in business, municipal governance, and in the not-for-profit community will allow me to excel as a councilman.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

Strengthening Naperville’s financial position will be my highest priority. We have significant unfunded pension liability on our books. I want to see Naperville become more aggressive on business growth and development. Both of which will strengthen our city financially. I want a greater pro-business tone coming from our dais. We should want businesses to come here, we should want growth. We should want more opportunities for our residents and the next generation.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

My experience on Naperville’s Planning and Zoning commission will allow me to step in immediately and be prepared to contribute as a councilman. I’ve worked with residents and the staff. I’ve worked on and reviewed development proposals. I’ve already had the experience of working on controversial development proposals and projects. I’m ready for the job.

How long have you lived in Naperville (if applicable, if not how long have you been involved with Napeville)?

I moved to Naperville upon graduating from law school in 2000.

What's your favorite thing about Naperville?

Naperville is an exciting place to live. It’s a dynamic, community-conscious community. There’s never a dull moment here. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

What is the biggest problem in Naperville?

That’s its located in Illinois. Illinois faces enormous problems financially. These problems will inevitably impact Naperville. We need to protect ourselves from our States financial woes through business growth, economic development, and controlled spending.

Previous elected offices: None

Applicable experience qualifying you for the position:

  • 2009-2010 Outstanding Volunteer Naperville School District 203
  • Volunteer consultant for the NNHS Guidance Office of the Future project in 2009 which engaged students, staff, parents and teachers in reshaping the Student Services Department
  • NNHS Marching Band Chaperone Committee Co-Chair 2010-2013
  • Project HELP Parent Mentor volunteer 2011-Current
  • Author of: Changing the Way We Change at Heathside School; Managing Schools Today; 2002.

In 2001, while living in London, England, I volunteered to work with a local school in which the Principal was exploring ways to get staff and students more fully engaged in the strategic planning process. We involved nearly every one of the 1200 students and staff including a one-day session with 300 students and teachers.  That project, which lasted over a year with off-shoots continuing for nearly 2 more years, led to major change which the principal and I then captured in 2009 in a book titled; Brilliant! The Heathside School Story: A Case Study of Whole School Transformation using Appreciative Inquiry: Kingsham Press Ltd., U.K.

Here in Naperville, I have been actively engaged in District 203, especially since my son entered high school in 2009 as Kevin Pobst became Principal.  My book had just been published when I met Kevin. I gave him a copy and offered to help him in any way possible as I had seen what happens when students and staff are fully engaged in school improvement efforts. We met not long after and I detailed the approach called Appreciative Inquiry, an innovative and energizing way to deal with issues. Kevin asked me to support him in some major changes to the Student Services department. At the culmination of that volunteer project, we engaged over 100 students, staff, teachers and parents in a one-day session on Creating the Guidance Office of the Future. This crucial meeting set the stage for significant changes in the department. I was awarded the District 203 Outstanding Volunteer Award for this work.

I have served as a volunteer parent mentor for Project HELP for the past two and a half years. HELP believes that parents who are determined, confident, and supported in their parental responsibilities can provide an environment where children can live up to their potential. As a mentor, I work 1-1 with parents helping them become the best they can be.

I served for two years as a board member of my synagogue.  The President said he most valued my ability to help the Board stay focused and take the conversations to a deeper and more productive level.

I am a member of the Naperville Chamber of Commerce and on the board of the Creekside Manor Homeowners Association.

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I have spent the past 23 years helping organizations in business, non-profit and education improve their performance. I want to bring that experience and expertise and fresh perspective to where it matters most, our kids in our schools because there is nothing more important for our future. The board’s actions and decisions have enormous impact on our entire community; not just the 17,000 kids, but also every family, teacher, staff member, business owner and resident. Given prudent management of our strong financial position, our passionate teachers, our involved parents and our inspired students, we can and should be a national benchmark for K-12 education.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

Engagement and Transparency:

Our school district has a broad group of stakeholders including students, teachers, staff, administrators, parents, businesses, retirees, etc., all of whom matter. The key to success is finding new ways for the board and administration to more fully engage with everyone early and often so that people know that their voices were heard, their perspectives valued, and their input considered. Bringing people along through the entire process leads to smoother and faster implementation after the decision is made.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

  1. My family has experienced the entire school system through my son’s years at Mill St., Jefferson and North.  My expectations of 203 as the parent of a 4th grader were much different than they are now.
  2. 23 years of consulting helping organizations in business, non-profits and education improve their performance.
  3. Published author on school transformation.
  • How long have you lived in Naperville (if applicable, if not how long have you been involved with Naperville)?  9 years

What's your favorite thing about Naperville?  The access to the outdoors—parks, bike paths, Centennial Beach, and its an inviting (and walkable) downtown.

Applicable experience qualifying you for the position:

  • Naperville Public Library Trustee 2006-present
    • Current President 2012-2013
  • Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee – Board of Directors 2009-2012

  • Naperville Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program  2001
  • Served on three Indian Prairie School District referendum committees in the 1990’s which all passed

  • What is the primary reason you are running for this office?
    • Solely for Public Service. I have no single issue nor do I have a hidden agenda.  I think my experience with the school board, chamber board, Rotary President and Library President serves me well on how this city operates and how a good functioning board should work. Since both my children have graduated college and moved out of the house, I do have the time. To do a good job on the council requires long hours reading the board packet at the kitchen table and as well as meeting with and listening to the residences.
  • What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?
    • Fiscal Responsibility. The public wants to hear that we are spending their taxes in the priority areas and is not wasted. They want to know that we are trying to maximize the tax value.
  • What sets you apart from the other candidates?
    • I believe I have more experience than any other non-incumbent candidate (see above).
    • I’m a good listener. Phoenix Closures Customer Service department of 10 reports to me and daily I get involved with customer service issues.  I also served four years on the school board, and obviously dealt with a whole host of issues with parents and other stakeholders. It’s important to actually listen to people, even if they have a different opinion than you do. Sometimes they change your mind.
  • How long have you lived in Naperville (if applicable, if not how long have you been involved with Naperville)?
    • My parents moved to Naperville in 1974 when I was 18. So I was here before they built Naperville North or the Fox Valley mall. I did go off to college and later transferred to Green Bay, WI; Pittsburg, PA; Atlanta, GA before I was transferred again in 1989. I deliberately came back to live in Naperville.
    • I’ve been involved in community service since the early 90’s.
  • What's your favorite thing about Naperville?
    • This is an impossible question to pick the only one thing. The people here are very friendly, intelligent and have a spirit of volunteerism that maybe unprecedented anywhere else.

  • What is the biggest problem in Naperville?

  • The traffic. I’ve been asking that question since last fall, and almost everyone asks me to see what we can do to improve the traffic. Overall the residences are very happy with the city services.

    C.P.A.– registered in Illinois

    Occupation: Community volunteer

    Previous elected offices:
2009 Board of Education District 203

Applicable experience qualifying you for the position:
I have been an involved Board member since 2007, Vice President since 2009.  I am passionate about students and their educational potential and am always visible and available in the community. I hope my financial education and experience will continue to serve the community’s needs.

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I feel my experience, as a board member for the last five and a half years will be important as we navigate some significant changes in education and shifts in demands in the district’s financial resources. I am an experienced leader and an independent thinker who has always been responsive to the wide variety of stakeholders in our District.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

Maintaining Educational Excellence. High quality public education is a hallmark of our community. Businesses and families move to our community because of our schools. While I believe our schools are very strong in the context of our state, we must prepare our students to enter a global society. Therefore, we need to evaluate our success on a more global basis. New standards called the Common Core will replace existing state standards and involve more rigor. The introduction of Common Core standards will be challenging for our educators and students, so our district has to keep an in-depth monitoring process in place to make sure this new approach is effective and ultimately ensures high performance.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

My involvement with the community and experience as a board member. I have been a very active and visible member of the community for over 20 years and a very committed  board member. I believe each student should have the opportunity to develop his or her own unique potential through access to a quality educational program and a supportive learning environment.

Letter: League of Women Voters Supports At-Large Elections

    Letter to the editor.

The League of Women Voters of Naperville supports at-large elections. In 2010, members of the League of Women Voters of Naperville undertook a study to determine the methods available for electing members of the city council. The results can be found on our website at http://naperville.il.lwv.org/councilelections.htm This study was done in advance of the 2010 election in which the referendum question asking voters whether to divide the city into districts was held.

We considered representation in other large Illinois cities with a council manager form of government: 72% have at-large representation; 8% have a mixed type representation and 20% have district representation.

Demographics including homogeneous population, size, growth, density and distribution of the population were primary reasons why the League believed at-large” election was the best choice for Naperville.

Other large cities in Illinois (Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Joliet, andSpringfield) have significantly different demographic profiles with large minority populations. District representation best fits the demographics of the homogeneous population of Naperville.

Many people think that having districts will ensure that all areas of the city will have a representative on the city council. This is not necessarily true. The size of each district will be at least 30,000 people, which is larger than some cities in Illinois. In fact, under the mixed method, five of the nine council members possibly could come from one area of the city.

We encourage all voters to be informed as they vote in the primary election on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

    - Mary Wright, President League of Women Voters of Naperville

Lisle Man Gets 26 Years for First-Degree Murder in Crash

A 56-year-old Lisle man will serve 100 percent of 26 years in prison for first-degree murder for crashing into and killing a 25-year-old mother in Waukegan in December 2010, the Daily Herald reports

According to the paper, Donald Mischke, 56, was charged with crashing his car into Elisha Clark-Idelburg’s (of Grayslake) and killing her while fleeing police at speeds up to 100 mph after breaking into a Waukegan Target and stealing a $600 flat-screen television to pay for cocaine, which he also had in his system at the time of the crash, prosecutors said.

Mischke will serve concurrent 26- and 7-year terms for first-degree murder and aggravated DUI; a first-degree murder charge can be applied if a victim is killed while the offender is committing another crime, the paper said.

“Your single-minded desire to commit a burglary evinced a callous disregard for anyone or anything that got in your way,” Circuit Judge Mark Levitt told Mischke at sentencing, according to the Lake County News-Sun. “Nothing can repair the pain when an innocent life is taken.”

According to the News-Sun, Mischke blamed his attorney, Chris Lombardo, for the conviction, and filed a motion for ineffective counsel that was denied; Mischke also apologized to Clark-Idelburg’s family.

“I am a father. I know the worst nightmare of losing a child. I’ve had nightmares about that. I can’t fathom actually experiencing the pain that I’ve caused them,” the paper quoted Mischke saying.

Naperville Girl’s Memory Honored in Brookfield Zoo Frog Exhibit

A new exhibit at Brookfield Zoo working to conserve the nearly extinct Panamanian golden frog—the national animal of Panama—is dedicated to the memory of Stacy Blundell, the Naperville teen killed by a drunk driver in 2011, in recognition of her passion for amphibians, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to the paper, Blundell worked at a pet store and spent much of her salary on filling her personal terrariums with the frogs and toads she loved; now, underneath an exhibit meant to preserve one of the world’s rarest, rests a plaque saying “In Loving Memory of Frog Enthusiast Stacey Blundell,” and “SB” is carved into a rock in the display.

"This really has been my bright spot," Blundell’s father Phil told the paper, of the exhibit, which he proposed to the zoo, a place Stacey also loved. "A lot of the other things for her were great, but this is the one thing I thought that Stacey would really enjoy and that we would be able to enjoy with her had she still been here."

"It's such an important conservation project that the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and Brookfield are doing," Jeff Mitchell, associate curator of aquatics and reptiles for the Chicago Zoological Society, added to the paper.

Hey Mom and Dad: What Curfews Do You Set for Your Teens?

I hated my 10 o'clock curfew growing up, but I think my parents did the right thing.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.

Most teens love to stay out late with their friends, a habit upon which many parents prefer to keep a certain degree of limitations. Mom and Dad tend to know better about when their kids need to get some sleep, after all—and when there's liable to be less reason to be out. Which brings us to this week's question:

What curfews have you set for your teenage children, and how do you enforce them?

Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Tracy Colangelo: My son is 15 and he has to be home by the town's curfew. Except on school nights, he's typically not out. He's usually with a group of friends at one's house. How do I enforce it? It's the rule, so he follows it. — Wheaton Patch Facebook

Karen Sherman Bushy: I did not ever set a curfew for my children. I don't believe an artificially set time expectation teaches them anything at all about responsibility and judgement. Rather, I would ask them where they were going and with whom....then I would ask them "When may I reasonably expect you to be home?" They had to figure out what was appropriate for where they were going and what activities were being planned. — Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Hank Beckman: When I was in high school, I was the only one of my friends that had to be in at curfew time--11 p.m., I think it was. The only exception was prom night or if I was playing hockey in one of those 3 -in-the morning ice rentals. I'm still a little upset about it. — Wheaton Patch Facebook

Sue Rethford D'Anza: I must be a mean mom. My kids had to be in by 9 on school nights, and 11 on the weekend. Nothing good can happen after 11pm. My son's exception was hockey as well. The older he got, the later the ice time, even during the week. — Wheaton Patch Facebook

Laura Temple: We too have flexibility depending on the event and who they are with. Except while they are under the graduated driver's license. Then we enforced that driving curfew! — Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Dawn Muldowney Neylon: Local laws say under 17 years old-11pm Mon-Thursday, midnight on Friday and Saturday. Our family curfew was always 1/2 before legal curfew. If they were driving, graduated licensing rules from the State are even stricter: 10pm Mon-Thurs, 11pm Fri-Sat. — Naperville Patch Facebook

Nina Tuccori Fortin: 9-10 pm s-f, 11:30pm Fri nite, 12:00 Sat nite. — Woodridge Patch Facebook

Jeffrey Rampage Finn: Whatever time I tell them. I don't have to enforce it,they listen. — Lemont Patch Facebook

Garrett Kent: 11 p.m. if they are driving... I am not a parent, but that is when the night time police shift begins for a reason. — Wheaton Patch Facebook

Merilou Grant: You are driving our car, be in the house by midnight. — Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Kim Peters Lutz: Nothing good happens after midnight—doesn't matter how old you are! — Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook
