Naper Settlement wants to know how well you can cure a sweet tooth.
If you're up for the challenge, there’s still time to enter Naper Settlement's Apple Pie Contest that will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11 as part of the Hometown Picnic.
Along with the contest, the Hometown Picnic will also include family-friendly games like a water balloon toss, watermelon seed spitting contest and more. Guests can bring their own food or purchase lunch on the grounds.
Pies must use apples as their key ingredient and any type of crust can be used. Judging criteria includes appearance, crust, filling and overall impression.
Make sure to deliver your apple pie by noon on Saturday, Aug. 11 to the Meeting House, located on the corner of Webster Street and Porter Avenue. Each pie should have an index card with the type of pie, the baker’s name, phone number and/or e-mail address.
Judging will begin at 1 p.m. by guest judges. The winner will be announced at 2:30 p.m. at the Naperville Light Guard Band concert. Winners will be photographed and posted Naper Settlement's website and Facebook page. Each baker submitting a pie will receive free entry to the Hometown Picnic.
All bakers must preregister by Thursday, Aug. 9 by contacting Jenn Edginton, Learning Experiences Coordinator, at 630-305-5252 or e-mailing her at edgintonj@naperville.il.us. Please provide the name and type of pie (i.e. single crust, double crust, streusel topping, etc.), the baker’s name, phone number and/or e-mail address.
Judges are Tim West, commentary editor at the Naperville Sun; Stephanie Penick, publisher of Positively Naperville; Mike Krol, chairman of the Naperville Heritage Society board of directors; and Neda Darwish, owner of Sugar Monkey Cupcakes. Winners will also receive a ribbon, baking-related prizes and bragging rights.
