A roof fire Friday morning at the site of DeVry University was caused by a contractor, Naperville Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were called to a fire on the roof of a five-story office building, the site of DeVry University's Naperville location, at 2056 Westings Ave. Friday morning.

No one was injured and the building was evacuated, said Naperville Fire Department Division Chief Mark Ziemnik. The Naperville Fire Investigation Team was able to determine contractors working on the building’s roof caused the fire.

The contractors were working on the roof when the fire started, Ziemnik said.

The fire call came in to the Public Safety Answering Point at 7:16 a.m. and 25 members of the department with three fire engines, two truck companies, two medic units, two command units and a squad company responded to the fire, according to Ziemnik. The first firefighters on the scene arrived at 7:22 a.m. and learned from building management contractors were working on the roof.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, though crews stayed at the site for an hour working on the roof and working to prevent water damage to the building’s fifth floor. Ziemnik said the fire was relatively small. Estimated damage was $50,000.

The Naperville Police Department and Warrenville Fire Protection District assisted at the fire.
