Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk surprised many in announcing his support of same-sex civil marriage Tuesday.
Kirk is just the second Republican Senator to buck his party with his stance. In a statement on his website Kirk said,
“When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others. Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this Earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back-- government has no place in the middle.”
Patch Facebook readers from across our network had plenty to say Tuesday. Here’s a sampling of their opinions:
David E. It's Jedi like. Good move senator and a brave one considering your party these days.
Joel C. Good for Sen. Kirk, who BTW is proof that Republicans can actually win elections if they take common-sense, middle-of-the-road positions on fiscal and social issues and are willing to work with members on both sides of the aisle.
Janice B. God said a man shall leave his mother and father and cleave unto his wife and the two shall be one....marriage as God intended is between a man and a woman. The bible calls homosexuality SIN not a lifestyle. Truth is truth whether everyone believes it or no one believes. Let God be true and every man a liar. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. The God that lived in Moses time is just the same today! God said it that settles it ..... it does not matter what this wicked evil world thinks is right....if it goes against God's word it is WRONG!!!
Lea Ann S. Glad some Republicans are stepping forward in support of marriage equality.
