Girl Scout cookies are beloved by many and spread cheer and happiness with each bite.
A troop of Daisy Scouts from Grand Park Elementary in Plainfield wanted to share that joy with others and chose to use profits from their cookie sales to benefit the Naperville Humane Society.
Troop leader Linda Roschi said the project is helping the girls learn valuable life skills like decision-making and money management, plus learning to give back and help others.
The troop gathered at the Naperville Humane Society earlier in January to learn about humane education of the animals and to deliver “interest boxes” for the dogs, which they filled with toys and treats.
“What’s a stray dog?” Humane Educational Manager Terri Hancock asked the assembled Daisies.
“A dog that doesn’t have a home?” suggested one Daisy scout.
“And how do you think they feel not having a home?” asked Hancock.
“Sad,” the girls chorused.
But the Daisies were there to cheer up some of the dogs and make their stay a little better until they find their forever home.
Hancock gave the girls and their chaperones a tour of the facility, pointing out donations, certain treats for days of the week, and introducing them to the dogs and cats that are currently at the shelter.
The Daisies finished the day by creating a few of the interest boxes for the dogs and delivering them.
