Kevin Sings the News: 'A Year Like That'

Chicagoland weather is unpredictable.

When Patch troubadour Kevin Trudo wrote this song on Wednesday, it was bitterly cold. Since then, mild and warm. It’s impossible to know what’s coming around the bend, which is kind of the point of this week’s song. Life throws unpredictable things at us, but they only make us stronger.

This week’s tune references a bunch of stories from the past seven days, including one about a Montgomery man charged with battery at a Bret Michaels show, and one about a pair of Yorkville moms who got to meet Mr. Michaels at the same concert.

There’s also this one about a Woodridge man sent to the hospital after a fight at a restaurant, this one about Darien’s peewee cheerleaders advancing to the nationals, an old home that was turned into a history center in Romeoville, and a frozen body found in a truck in Plainfield.

The song is called “A Year Like That,” and the lyrics are printed below for your convenience. For more on Kevin Trudo, check out his Facebook page. And come back next week for another song.

A Year Like That

You know those winter days
When every soft surface is clothed in ice
And every sound or stillness is amplified
Yeah, it's been a week like that

It's finally cold outside
Maybe we're all a little brittle or paralyzed
We're starting fights
At things that should be fun, like a concert or a restaurant
But let's not forget the stuff we've got

Like little girls and their dreams
They can still be anything
Our hometowns and histories
Let's remember everything
We can wait out in the cold for a chance
To meet some one we only wish we loved
Or be found frozen in our trucks

I love these winter days
When everything out your window has ice on it
and it's hard, yes, but in its hardness it's delicate
It's been a year like that

It's finally cold outside and
If we're brave enough this morning we'll walk in it
We're rarely made worse by our hardships
We're made stronger and it's our world
The only world we'll inherit.
