Alisa Massaro

The Hickory Street double murder case took a surprising twist this week when one of the defense lawyers complainedaboutstoriesinPatch and the judge ordered the attorneys involved not to talk to the media.

Will County Judge Gerald Kinney also sealed the file for the case against accused killers Adam Landerman, 19, Joshua Miner, 24, Alisa Massaro, 18, and Bethany McKee, also 18.

The four were charged with murdering Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover, both 22, in Massaro's house on Hickory Street in Joliet.

Judge Kinney said he wants both defense attorneys and prosecutors to investigate who allegedly leaked police reports. The judge said he will revisit the issue on March 11.

Alexander R. Georg, 27, was charged with attempted murder after stabbing a woman in a domestic dispute. Police took this booking photo while he was under observation at Edward Hospital.

The Naperville man charged with attempted murder in the stabbing and choking of his mother in an August 2011 incident has once again been found unfit to stand trial, CBS Chicago reports.

Alexander R. Georg, 27, of the 1100 block of Spring Garden Circle, was charged with attempted murder, a Class X felony, after allegedy attacking, stabbing and attempting to strangle his mother at their home after she offered to make him a sandwich. He had been released from Linden Oaks Hospital, an Edward Hospital mental-health ward, earlier that same day.

Georg had previously been found fit to stand trial in October and the case against him had resumed, but a psychological report ordered by Judge Kathryn Creswell was delayed when he refused to take his medication.

According to CBS, Gerog's behavior since the declaration of fitness in October has forced authorities to reverse their previous decision and prescribe further mental-health treatment at the downstate Chester Mental Health Center.

The defendant has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, the report said.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, chairman and founder of the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, jokingly offers guests a warning during last year’s “Men Who Cook.”

The following was provided by the Will County State's Attorney's office. The author, Charles B. Pelkie, is the office's director of public affairs.

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow invite everyone to dinner at the Fifth Annual “Men Who Cook” culinary competition from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the Pipefitters Training Center Local 597 at 10850 187th Street in Mokena.

Fifty amateur chefs—local guys from right here in our community—will fire up their ovens to cook their favorite home recipes for hundreds of guests at the annual fundraising competition to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center, a not-for-profit agency that helps children who are the victims of sexual and physical abuse.

Save the date and come ready to eat. Amateur cooks will offer bite-size samples of their best home-cooked meals—the dishes they serve their own families.  After making the rounds, guests will vote for their favorite dish in each of four categories: appetizer, side dish, entrée, and dessert.

It’s an inexpensive and exciting way to support the Children’s Advocacy Center and cheer on your favorite chef. The cost to sample the fine cuisine is an affordable $40 per person; $75 per couple. The price is $10 for children 6-12; kids 5 and under can attend for free.

And don’t get fancy by dressing up. It’s a casual evening.

“There are many guys right here in our community who really know how to cook, and our annual competition gives them the opportunity to showcase their culinary talents,” said Glasgow, who founded the Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 and chairs its Board of Directors. “Our guests will find cuisine from across the globe—from the American South to Eastern Europe; from Italy to China; it’s a diverse menu. No one will leave hungry.”

WJOL’s Lynne, Mary and Natalie will return to the “Men Who Cook” Red Carpet this year to greet guests and serve as hostesses. And Jackson, a licensed therapy dog who greets children at the Advocacy Center, will pay a visit. New this year: Kids Corner with all kinds of activities for younger guests.

Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 to improve investigations of child sexual abuse cases. The center’s professionally trained and compassionate staff performs child-sensitive interviews when there are allegations of sexual or severe physical abuse. Children’s recorded statements have been used in the successful prosecution of hundreds of predators.

The State’s Attorney founded the center as a 501-c-3 non-profit organization so it would not impact taxpayers. As a result, the center relies on grants, foundations and fundraisers like “Men Who Cook” to operate.

Tickets for “Men Who Cook” are available on-line at www.menwhocook.info or they can be purchased at the door.  If you have any questions, contact the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center at 815-774-4565 or visit on the Web at www.willcountychildrensadvocacy.org, www.menwhocook.info or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/menwhocook.

There are still a limited number of spots available for men who are interested in cooking. For information, call 815-774-4565.

Hey Mom and Dad, How Much Allowance Do Your Kids Get For Their Chores?

    $
    0
    0

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.

Many parents assign their children certain chores or other duties around the house in exchange for a regular allowance as a good way to instill work ethic and responsibility. But the range of money paid and work performed can vary significantly from house to house. That brings us to this week's question:

What is your kids’ allowance and what are the expectations for them to earn it?

Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Julie Hallock Howard: We take a hybrid approach. Our philosophy is that chores should be done because that's what you do as a member of the family. Our 8-year-old has several chores that he is required to do, just because that is how a family works. However, he can earn money by doing an out-of-the ordinary task. He does get an allowance every week, and this is strictly to learn the value of money. — Batavia Patch Facebook

Andrew Meyer: I would give my kids $100 a night to go to sleep when we ask. — Darien Patch Facebook

Karen Sherman Bushy: When my kids were that age they got no "allowance". To me that word indicates some kind of an entitlement to some amount of money. Didn't work that way in our house. They got paid for "pay jobs"....and if the job was not completed and on time, they didn't get paid. That only happened once or twice - they figured out real quick that there is no 'free ride' and that if you don't perform, you don't get paid.....otherwise how do you decide when in their young life do you start teaching them about personal responsibility and consequences? When does the 'allowance' stop, and what would be the reason for it? — Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Nicole Stanton: Pretty sure Suze Orman says No Allowance. That's my line anyway. — Elmhurst Patch Facebook

Kristen Norris Zimny: No allowance here. Kids are expected to do their fair share at home. They get treats or items they want pretty often, so that makes up for no allowance. As my oldest told me once- "why should I get paid for something that you don't get paid for". I never got an allowance and I turned out just fine. — Geneva Patch Facebook

Nan Ziegler: I was born in the early 50's, and my allowance for a long time was a dime for every year I was old. — Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Patch Facebook

Rae Wall: My kids did things as part of being a family. Cleaned their bedrooms, took out the garbage, mowed the lawn, etc. As they got older, they got paid for doing extra chores. Last summer my college aged boy even did a lot of "spring cleaning" for extra money-windows, baseboards, kitchen cabinets! — Lemont Patch Facebook

Kerin Thomas Smith: $15/week (age 12). She has to clean her room, clean her bathroom, pick up the yard after the dogs, do 1 dusting and 1 vacuumming chore. All chores must be done to get paid. No prorations! — Naperville Patch Facebook

JohnPatience Corfield: Our 8 yr old gets 3$ a week for feeding and cleaning up after our two cats daily... — St. Charles Patch Facebook
